No fewer than 10,000 pupils and students from primary and secondary schools nationwide took part on Saturday in the 23rd Annual National Mathematics Competition (ANMC), organised by the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC), in partnership with the National Mathematical Centre (NMC).

The contest drew participants from Primary 5 and 6, as well as Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 to 3. It was held concurrently at designated centres in 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), underscoring its extensive reach and growing prominence across the country.

Addressing participants during the event, NTIC Managing Director, Dr. Fevzullah Bilgin, described the contest as one of Nigeria’s biggest and most respected mathematics competitions. He noted that for over two decades, the initiative has focused on strengthening mathematics education at the basic level and building students’ capacity through healthy academic competition.

According to him, the competition initially targeted only Primary 5 and 6 pupils preparing for JSS1, but was expanded in 2022 to include a junior category. This development, he explained, opened the door for JSS 1, 2 and 3 students to participate and benefit from scholarship opportunities.

Bilgin said about 10,000 students participated in this year’s edition, adding that since its inception in 2003, the ANMC has evolved into a nationally recognised platform for discovering and nurturing mathematical talent.

He also emphasised the growing importance of mathematics in modern education, particularly with the nationwide adoption of STEM curricula. He noted that a solid understanding of mathematics is now critical for students who aspire to excel in science, technology and related fields.

In addition to assessing academic skills, the ANMC serves as a scholarship scheme. Outstanding students who advance after the second round will receive full-tuition scholarships to study at NTIC, alongside cash prizes. Mathematics teachers of successful candidates will also earn cash rewards, while their schools will be supported with educational resources such as desktop computers, printers and tablets.

The ANMC Coordinator, Mr. Erdal, highlighted the competition’s long-term impact, stating that over 500,000 pupils have participated since 2003. He added that more than 600 exceptional students have benefited from fully-funded scholarships covering tuition and hostel accommodation throughout their six years of secondary education.
