No fewer than 142 women benefited from a health and empowerment outreach organised by Venus67 in collaboration with the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Lagos Chapter, to mark this year’s International Women’s Day.

The programme, held at the POWA Secretariat in Ikeja, focused on raising awareness about fibroids and promoting women’s wellbeing within police communities.

The event attracted key stakeholders, including the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, POWA Chairperson, Mrs. Juliet Odesanya, medical professionals, and members of the media.

A major highlight was a health talk delivered by Ms. Balogun Morenikeji Mautin, Head of Health Education at the Ikosi-Isheri Local Government Health Department, who educated participants on fibroids, their symptoms, prevention, and the importance of early medical consultation. Free medical screenings were also conducted for attendees.

Participants were further sensitised on pregnancy care, emphasizing the link between fibroids and maternal health, as well as the need for antenatal care, proper nutrition, and healthy living practices.

Babatunde Opeifa, Founder of Venus67, used the platform to introduce the KidCode Africa Academy, a digital literacy initiative aimed at equipping children with coding and technology skills for opportunities in the digital economy.

Experts at the event noted that fibroids affect up to 80 percent of Nigerian women of reproductive age, yet they remain poorly understood and often untreated, leading to complications such as infertility.

They added that Nigeria spends over N10.8 billion annually managing about 12.77 million cases, with treatment costing an average of N850,000 per patient, while many women delay seeking medical care for years.

Organisers said the outreach aligns with the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Give to Gain,” highlighting the need for sustained collaboration in advancing women’s health and empowerment.
