Ikeja Dynamic Model Lions Club yesterday held free diabetes screening for the people of Alausa community in Ikeja.

The event, which was to commemorate the club’s February service activity, also included BP tests, malaria tests as well as free medication to those in need.

The first Vice-president of the club, Lion Osunremi Temitayo, said the programme was in fulfillment of one of Lions Club International’s core areas, which is eradication of diabetes.

“So every Lions’ service year, we take it as a point of call to visit communities in Ikeja, which is our base, to give them free diabetes, free malaria and free hepatitis tests. And the people of the community have always embraced and taken advantage of the project.

The Service Chairperson of the club, Lion Sherif Adenekan, said the programme was “in fulfillment of the organisation’s monthly activities, which for the month of February is Free Diabetes Day. Also it is an opportunity to reach out to the community and assist them medically.

In all, Adenekan said about 200 people would have benefitted from the programme at the end of the day.

A beneficiary, Abubakar Bamigbaye expressed his delight at the programme. “I feel delighted. I see it as an opportunity because if I were to go to a hospital, I know what it would cost me. Thankfully, my BP and sugar level is okay.”

Another beneficiary, Noimat Ajenifuja, said, “I’ve always wanted to do it, so seeing them set up, I had to leave every other thing I was doing to come and take advantage of it. We in Alausa community appreciate programmes like this because our business hardly avail us the opportunity to go for check-ups in hospitals.”
