...Declares for Senate

From Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

A member of the Governing Board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Sam Onuigbo, has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to field knowledgeable and experienced candidates for the National Assembly to strengthen President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Onuigbo said President Tinubu’s resolve to consolidate ongoing reforms requires the support of lawmakers who have proven capacity and integrity.

The former lawmaker made this known at the weekend while formally declaring his intention to contest the Abia Central Senatorial seat on the platform of the APC.

The declaration took place at Odoziobodo Hills in Obuohia Obi-Ibere, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State.
Onuigbo said his decision followed wide consultations with family members, friends and political associates.

He stated: “The determination of President Tinubu to finish strong and consolidate on the crucial reforms of the Renewed Hope Agenda demands that only those that have been tried, tested and not found wanting, either in character, carriage and comportment should be supported by the party.

“This gathering of my extended political family and leaders of our great party, the APC, is part of the ongoing conversation to engender commonality of understanding and ensure that we embark on this journey as a united family.”

He noted that his two-term representation of Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency between 2015 and 2023 has equipped him with the experience required to serve effectively in the Senate.

Onuigbo added: “Right from my early life journey, I have always dedicated my attention on how to render service… This knack for leadership through humble service found concrete expression in my nearly 18 years of unbroken and meritorious service with the US Embassy in Lagos.”

Highlighting his legislative achievements, he pointed to his sponsorship of the Climate Change Act 2021, describing it as a landmark law that placed Nigeria on the global map in sustainability.

He stressed that the forthcoming general election is critical for the APC, noting that maintaining a strong majority in the National Assembly would be key to fast-tracking executive policies.

“Although President Tinubu is sure to clinch his second term mandate, only a National Assembly populated by knowledgeable, competent and experienced lawmakers will guarantee quick passage of executive bills,” he said.

Onuigbo further warned against electing unqualified candidates, stating: “Abia State cannot afford to send intellectual Lilliputs or persons of doubtful pedigree to the next National Assembly.”

On party politics, Onuigbo defended his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in 2020, describing it as a decision borne out of political foresight.

He said: “Most of those who celebrated impunity in PDP have now found their way into APC or elsewhere. I feel vindicated.

“It is with a great sense of responsibility that I stand before you to declare my intention to contest the Abia Central Senatorial seat in the next general election.”
