The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has announced his departure from the party and his decision to join the Peoples Redemption Party.
Baba-Ahmed made the announcement on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, citing internal disagreements and what he described as a departure from the party’s founding principles.
“I am leaving the Labour Party at midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination,” he said.
He said rising tensions within the party and recent internal decisions made his continued membership untenable, alleging that some developments were aimed at weakening his influence.

“What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he added.
Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, described the PRP as a party rooted in strong ideological traditions and historical relevance.
The PRP, founded in 1978 by the late Aminu Kano, is widely recognised as one of Nigeria’s oldest political movements with a progressive orientation.
His defection is expected to further alter the dynamics within the opposition bloc ahead of the 2027 general elections.
