A support group within the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Emerging Progressives Leaders’ Forum (EPLF), has endorsed the decision by Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, and the party leadership to adopt direct primaries for selecting candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group described the move as a bold step toward strengthening internal democracy, noting that it shifts away from the delegate system and returns decision-making power to grassroots party members.
In a statement jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Barrister Johnson Preye-Aganaba, and Secretary, Alhaji Abdulkarim Ibrahim, the EPLF commended the Nasarawa APC leadership for prioritising inclusivity.

“The decision to embrace direct primaries is a clear demonstration of commitment to transparency, fairness and accountability. It ensures that aspirants emerge through a credible and widely accepted process, thereby reducing internal conflicts and post-primary disputes,” the statement said.
The forum noted that allowing all registered party members to vote would help curb the imposition of candidates, a recurring issue in Nigeria’s political landscape.
It added that the approach would boost trust and confidence among party members while promoting wider participation, as power shifts from a limited number of delegates to the broader membership.
According to the EPLF, the system is also expected to strengthen party structures by encouraging grassroots engagement and loyalty, while ensuring that candidates who emerge enjoy broad-based support.

The group further stated that the move aligns with growing calls for electoral reforms nationwide and sets an example for other states and political parties.
While commending Governor Sule’s leadership, the forum stressed that the success of the initiative would depend on its implementation, urging stakeholders to ensure the process is peaceful, transparent and well-coordinated.
“We call on party faithful in Nasarawa state to take full advantage of this opportunity by actively participating in the process. Your involvement is crucial to the success of this initiative,” the Forum added.
The Forum then expressed optimism that this move will not only foster unity within the Nasarawa APC but also contribute significantly to the overall stability and growth of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
