The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said that the people of Rivers and not an individual will decide the next governor of the state in 2027.

The party spoke while responding to remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, concerning the 2027 governorship succession in the state.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on Thursday, the state chairman of the party, Chukwudi Dimkpa, said the electorate through democratic participation would make their choice in 2027.

Dimkpa said the ADC was positioning itself as a credible platform with an emphasis on transparency, internal democracy, and broad-based participation.

He said the party was committed to building an inclusive political movement that reflected the interests of Rivers residents.

Speaking on zoning, the ADC chairman acknowledged its role in promoting balance and inclusion in the state, particularly between riverine and upland communities.

But he stressed the importance of combining equity with competence, adding that the party would adopt a consultative approach in selecting its candidate.

Dimkpa said the goal was to present a candidate with the capacity to govern effectively and secure wide acceptance across the state.

He said the party would, at the appropriate time, take the necessary decisions to foster unity and strengthen democratic processes.

The ADC maintained that issues such as governance, security, and economic development remained key priorities for residents, adding that leadership selection must reflect the concerns of the people.
