President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly tasked former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, with coordinating the activities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, in a move seen as an early step toward preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District and chairs the Senate Committee on South East Development Commission, said the directive followed a recent meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

In a post on his official Facebook page, the former Senate Chief Whip expressed appreciation for the assignment and pledged to reposition the party in the state.

“I sincerely thank His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the confidence reposed in me and the marching order to coordinate activities in Abia State in respect of our great party, the APC,” he said.

He added that his focus would be on strengthening unity within the party and preparing it for electoral success.

“As the most senior governor from the state, I will work with all stakeholders to ensure that the APC produces candidates who are widely acceptable and capable of delivering victory in Abia State for the President’s re-election, while promoting the overall interests of the state and the nation,” Kalu stated.

The development is seen as part of ongoing efforts by the ruling party to consolidate its structures in the South-East, particularly in Abia where it has faced strong opposition in previous elections.

Meanwhile, indications have emerged of a possible plan to grant automatic return tickets to selected senators ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, hinted at the move during a meeting with political stakeholders, noting that some lawmakers may be retained in recognition of their contributions to legislative stability and governance.

Those reportedly under consideration include Adamu Aliero, Abdulaziz Yari, Kalu, and Opeyemi Bamidele, among others.

Others mentioned are Yahaya Abdullahi, Abdullahi Yahaya Abubakar, Idiat Oluranti Adebule, Danjuma Goje and Adetokunbo Abiru.

According to the governor, the lawmakers have played significant roles in fostering cooperation between the executive and legislative arms, as well as ensuring the passage of key policies.

However, there has been no official confirmation from the Presidency or the APC national leadership on the proposed automatic tickets.

Political analysts say the twin developments — Kalu’s new role in Abia and the reported plan to retain experienced lawmakers — point to a broader strategy by the Tinubu administration to strengthen party cohesion at the state level while maintaining stability in the National Assembly ahead of 2027.
