In March 2026, only 30 per cent, or 4,089MW, of the electricity generation companies' (GenCos) installed capacity of 13,625MW was available for sending out energy.
This indicates that the upstream of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) was in acute downtime during the period under review, with a record 70% of GenCos' installed capacity idle.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) announced this in its March 2026 Operational Performance Factsheet.

It provided a breakdown of how Nigeria’s grid-connected power plants performed that month.

In the factsheet highlights, NERC said, "Plant Availability Factor (PAF): 30%, showing that an average of 4,089 MW was available for dispatch out of 13,625 MW installed capacity."
According to NERC, the DisCos utilized 3,815MW/h, representing 93% of the available capacity of 4,089MW.
The factsheet said, "Average Load Factor: 93%, showing that 3,815 MWh/h of available capacity was utilised."
NERC, however, revealed that the top energy producers were Ihovbor_2, Kainji_1, and Jebba_1, which stood out with strong availability and high utilisation levels.
