The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Kubwa, has refused a bail application filed by Chibuike Echem and Danjuma Mohammed, a former National Coordinator of the Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP) at the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the two defendants in January over an alleged multi-billion-naira contract-related matter.

They appeared before the High Court in Zuba on a 55-count charge bordering on advance fee fraud, forgery and conspiracy. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the charge marked CR/708/25, the case involves allegations of obtaining over N2.28 billion from Diamond Leeds Limited, a construction and equipment supply company, in connection with purported contract facilitation linked to government agencies.

The court ordered that the defendants be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre, citing its proximity to the court, after the prosecution requested their remand pending the determination of the case. Hearing was scheduled for ten consecutive days beginning March 25.

Lead prosecution counsel, B. C. Igwilo, SAN, indicated that about seven witnesses are expected to testify and urged objective reporting of the proceedings.
