A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) yesterday announced the suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal and Sadiq Dasin.

The suspension of the trio was announced in a statement signed by the Acting Chairman of the party in Adamawa State, Mohammed Suleiman Zumo, who accused them of undermining the ADC through their conduct.

“These individuals are suspended for their roles in fostering disunity, creating parallel structures, undermining lawful authority, and disregarding a subsisting court order,” the ADC chair alleged in the statement.

Babachir is the party’s Vice Chairman in the Northeast, and Dasin, a lawyer, is Chairman of the Transition Committee.

The ADC is bedevilled with a leadership crisis at the national level, with David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe claiming to be chairmen of different factions.

Both leaders are in court seeking judicial recognition as authentic leaders.

At a news briefing in Yola, Adamawa, yesterday, Zumo claimed that the party’s disciplinary committee had recommended the expulsion of Atiku, Lawal and Dasin.

Dasin was reportedly elected state chairman during controversial congresses conducted in the state by an ADC committee, allegedly against a court order suspending the exercise, under Lawal’s supervision.

Before the congresses, Yohanna Shehu, who was the state chairman, had gone to court with complaints that he and his executives were being sidelined in the planning process.

The State High Court sitting in Yola issued an order suspending the congresses and asked for the maintenance of the status quo till the determination of the substantive suit.

Giving reason for the party’s action, Zumo said the two high profile members with roots in the state have either been responsible for the conflicts troubling the ADC in Adamawa or are liable to blame for failing to resolve the conflicts.

He accused Lawal of leading the controversial congresses against the court injunction.
