A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Dr. Salihu Bakari Girei, has pledged to prioritise the welfare of ordinary citizens, drawing from his personal experience with hardship.

Girei made the declaration on Friday in Yola during a press briefing to formally announce his ambition, stating that his early struggles shaped his commitment to public service.

He recalled enduring extreme deprivation during his university days, including going 48 hours without food after his father, a retired public servant at the time, was yet to receive his benefits.

The aspirant further recounted living with limited clothing for years, noting that such experiences instilled in him a deep understanding of the challenges faced by many Nigerians.

He assured that, if elected, his administration would focus on improving the welfare of retirees, senior citizens, and youths across the state.

Girei, an educationist with extensive experience in the sector, said he would accord education top priority. He previously served as Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board and later as a director at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

At the declaration event, he also unveiled a “10-point covenant document,” which he described as a practical commitment to governance rather than a conventional political manifesto.

On agriculture, Girei emphasised that his background as a commercial farmer provides him with firsthand insight into the challenges confronting farmers, adding that his administration would implement policies to strengthen the sector.
