Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu  has made history, becoming the first Nigerian appointed as the Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) since its inception seven decades ago.

Adamu’s appointment was ratified  yesterday by the CAF Congress at the Giza Palace Hotel in Cairo following a proposal by the Executive Committee. He steps into the role immediately, succeeding Swiss-Congolese Veron Mosengo-Omba, who resigned from the position earlier the same day.

Until this elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he built a reputation for the high-level delivery of continental competitions.

In a swift reaction, the National Sports Commission (NSC) in Abuja described the appointment as a testament to Nigeria’s growing influence in global sports governance.

Chairman of the Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, labelled the move a "proud moment" for the nation.

"This is a landmark achievement not just for Samson Adamu, but for Nigeria as a whole. His track record within CAF speaks volumes, and we are confident he will bring excellence, integrity, and progressive leadership to this new role," Dikko stated.

The Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Adamu’s professional capacity and deep understanding of administrative frameworks at the highest level.

The son of renowned sports administrator Dr. Amos Adamu, the new Acting Secretary General brings extensive experience to the post. His previous tenure as Director of Tournaments earned him widespread respect for innovation and coordination across the continent.

In a statement signed by the Director of Press, Dr. Kehinde Ajayi, the NSC assured Adamu of the full support of the Nigerian sports community as he assumes leadership of the CAF secretariat.
