Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal led a delegation of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Bauchi State Government House in Bauchi.

Their mission was to woo Governor Bala Mohammed, who doubles as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum Chairman, into the ADC.

The governor, who hinted of a possible switch from the PDP amid what he described as a “headless party torn by internal crises”, promised to make his decision known tomorrow.

Mohammed’s decision came on the heels of the internal crises in PDP, marked by factional disputes and a gale of defections to rival parties.

Speaking shortly after hosting the ADC delegation, Mohammed described the ADC as a “more enduring and acceptable platform”, acknowledging ongoing talks to join the party.

He said: “I have pursued all avenues for reconciliation within the PDP, but it has not worked. We cannot remain where we are not wanted. ADC appears to be where our political destiny is taking us.”

The governor revealed that committees have been set up at both national and state levels to explore options, including discussions with the All Progressive Congress (APC), but he stressed that his priority is a platform that can unify the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The governor specifically criticized the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, saying: “We have somebody called Wike who is being used to destroy us… he has already taken over the party, holding all the positions of PDP.”

Lawal said the ADC is courting Bala Mohammed to strengthen opposition efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The one-time SGF said: “Senator David Mark sent us because he knows the battle ahead in 2027 can only succeed if all segments of Nigeria with goodwill unite.

“If we fail, Nigeria may not survive as we know it. People could be starving, unable to afford medical care, while insurgency spreads from home to home.”

Lawal described Mohammed as a “dogged fighter, a warrior, fearless,” whose leadership would be vital to the ADC’s mission.

“When he joins the ADC, he will be one of our field commanders. Our discussions were ‘fruitful, friendly, and brotherly.’

“His entry into ADC will alarm the current government and could provoke lawlessness in attempts to rig the 2027 elections. But we are confident that with him on board, we will be battle-tested and ready to confront the government, and victory will be ours.”
