The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over difficulties in securing a venue for its national convention, scheduled for Tuesday in Abuja.
Chairman of the party’s media and publicity sub-committee for the convention, Kola Ologbondiyan, disclosed in a post on X on Monday that the party had yet to receive approval for a venue less than 24 hours before the event.
This came amid heightened political activities ahead of the convention, with the party insisting it will go ahead with the event despite the leadership challenges it is facing.
“24 hours to the @ADCNig National Convention, the Nigerian-aligned political party is yet to be issued a venue,” he said.
Ologbondiyan added that the party had formally applied to use Eagle Square, a major public event venue in Abuja, stating, “As the bromide has shown, a letter was presented to the Office of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, for a permit to use the Eagles Square. The letter was acknowledged, but no response.”
He added that the party also approached officials at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium but was denied access to another facility.
“The ADC team paid several visits to the Ministry of Sports officials at the MKO Stadium. At the end, ADC was refused the use of the Valedrom.”
The ADC further alleged that private event centres in Abuja had declined its requests due to concerns about possible repercussions. “To make matters worse, privately owned Event Centres in Abuja are turning down the @ADCNig requests for fear of harassment in various forms from the government," he noted
Despite the situation, the party said its convention would proceed as planned, Ologbodiyan noted, “All ADC members, teeming party supporters and indeed all Nigerians are assured that, as contained in the NOTICE issued to @inecnigeria, the ADC National Convention will hold in Abuja as scheduled on Tuesday, April 14th, 2026.”
Unconfirmed reports, however, indicate that the party has secured an alternative venue near the Eagle Square and the Louis Edet House headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
