The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has called for a boycott of the Africa Energies Summit 2026, accusing the London-based event of discriminatory hiring practices that exclude Africans and Black professionals from employment opportunities.

The summit, scheduled for May 12–14, 2026, is one of the continent’s most prominent international forums for the upstream oil and gas industry.

The Chamber’s call represents a sharp escalation in its public campaign against the event, framing the issue as both an ethical and economic justice concern.

According to AEC Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk, institutions profiting from African markets cannot continue to benefit from African governments, sponsors, and commercial opportunities while allegedly denying Africans fair access to jobs.

He argued that exclusionary hiring contradicts the principles of growth, fairness, and partnership the industry claims to uphold.

The Chamber emphasises that local content should extend beyond oil blocks, field operations, service contracts, and procurement rules to include the institutions shaping the continent’s energy discourse. In this context, the boycott targets not just the Africa Energies Summit but a broader pattern in which African opportunity is marketed globally without meaningful African participation behind the scenes.

The Africa Energies Summit describes itself as the ninth edition of Africa’s premier global upstream conference, attracting governments, investors, national oil companies, and executives. The Chamber argues that the summit’s prominence makes the exclusion of Black professionals even more unacceptable, placing pressure on both organizers and African officials planning to attend.

The AEC stresses that its stance is pro-industry, highlighting the sector’s role in ending energy poverty, creating jobs, and strengthening energy security. The Chamber notes progress in developing African leadership across producing countries, making alleged exclusion by Africa-facing platforms harder to justify.

As of now, the summit has not publicly addressed the Chamber’s allegations or outlined any hiring commitments, leaving the controversy unresolved. With the event approaching, the boycott call could turn participation itself into a political and commercial statement.
