The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called on security and intelligence agencies in Nigeria to strengthen cooperation and operate as a unified front in addressing the country’s evolving security challenges.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to inter-agency synergy, innovation, and national development, particularly as preparations intensify for the African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026.

Tunji-Ojo made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja when he received a delegation of the AFRIDEX 2026 organisers, led by Major General Umar Alkali, on a courtesy visit.

Describing the initiative as “a very special programme,” the minister stressed that sustainable progress in Nigeria’s defence and security architecture depends on collaboration rather than isolated institutional efforts. He urged relevant agencies to adopt greater openness and partnership to enhance national impact.

In a statement issued by the Head of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Mrs Mary Ali, Tunji-Ojo also commended AFRIDEX as a strategic platform for showcasing innovation, particularly among Nigerian youths active in digital technology and cybersecurity.

He noted that expanding visibility for young innovators remains critical to strengthening national pride, boosting economic development, and improving global competitiveness.

The minister further emphasised the central role of research in development, calling for stronger linkages between innovation outputs and market opportunities. According to him, structured platforms that connect innovators, manufacturers, and investors are essential to translating research into measurable economic value.

Tunji-Ojo urged that AFRIDEX be sustained as an annual event, stating that while its inaugural edition may present operational challenges, it would also provide lessons for improvement in subsequent editions.

He also reiterated the need for deeper collaboration across all security and intelligence formations, warning against institutional rivalry and stressing that national security demands collective action rather than territorial considerations.

On visa facilitation, Dr. Tunji-Ojo acknowledged ongoing improvements but recommended the establishment of a dedicated support desk to ensure seamless entry processes for the anticipated influx of international participants.

Earlier, Major General Alkali expressed appreciation to the Minister for granting the audience and acknowledged his continued support for capacity building and inter-agency cooperation.

The delegation formally introduced AFRIDEX as a premier global defence and security exhibition scheduled to hold from October 26–29, 2026, at Eko Atlantic City, Lagos.

Organized with the support of the Federal Government of Nigeria and hosted by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), the event aims to bring together global leaders, policymakers, industry experts, and innovators.

Our correspondent gathered that the exhibition will showcase cutting-edge solutions across land, air, maritime, space, and cyber domains, with an expected participation of over 30,000 international attendees and 500 exhibitors.

Akali highlighted the critical role of the Ministry of Interior in ensuring the success of the event, particularly in areas of security and visa facilitation.

He formally invited the Minister to participate, while requesting the Ministry’s support in promoting AFRIDEX through its platforms and encouraging participation from agencies under its supervision.
