Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has stressed the need for technology-driven leadership to secure Nigeria’s future, saying emerging leaders must be equipped to navigate disruptions driven by artificial intelligence.

He said the nation’s economic and technological growth would depend largely on the quality of leadership and the capacity of its educational institutions.

Aiyedatiwa spoke on Thursday while delivering the Foundation Day lecture of Federal University of Technology Akure, titled “Leadership and Organisational Performance: Technology as a Driver.”

The governor noted that although technology continues to evolve, leadership remains central to determining the direction of society.

He dismissed concerns that artificial intelligence could replace human leadership, stressing that effective leadership requires wisdom, sound judgment and emotional intelligence.

Aiyedatiwa emphasised the critical role of universities in grooming future leaders, noting that their mandate goes beyond awarding certificates to shaping individuals capable of responding to global challenges.

He commended FUTA for sustaining a reputation for producing resilient and globally competitive graduates, urging institutions to remain focused on developing human capital for national development.

“Leadership is a key determinant of organisational success. It shapes vision, mobilises resources and drives the attainment of strategic goals,” he said.

He added that modern leadership must embrace innovation and technology, describing institutions like FUTA as strategic platforms for nurturing globally competitive leaders.

According to him, societies that will thrive in the future are those that cultivate leaders with a clear understanding of both human dynamics and technological trends.

In her remarks, FUTA Vice-Chancellor, Adenike Oladiji, described the institution as a forward-looking academic environment integrating technology with the humanities to address societal needs.

She said technology has become indispensable in the digital age and remains a critical tool for effective leadership, adding that knowledge thrives through collaboration between academia and industry.

Oladiji also appreciated the Ondo State Government for its support, including infrastructure upgrades and the conversion of the State Specialist Hospital to a teaching hospital.
