The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has extended felicitations to Muslims and Christians on the simultaneous commencement of Ramadan and Lent.
In a statement issued by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, Oba Owoade described the rare overlap as an opportunity to highlight shared values between the two faiths.
He noted that the periods serve as a bridge for interfaith dialogue, fostering mutual respect, empathy, and social cohesion.
“Both traditions emphasize fasting, self-discipline, and deep prayer as a way to draw closer to God. While methods differ—Lent involves partial fasting and abstinence, while Ramadan requires total daytime abstinence—the spiritual goal of purification is the same,” he said.
The monarch further explained that both seasons encourage repentance, charity, and generosity, reinforcing a commitment to community service and support for the poor.
He urged adherents to reflect on their common humanity, break down stereotypes, and promote a culture of peace.
Oba Owoade called on Christians and Muslims to demonstrate tolerance and a firm commitment to peaceful coexistence, describing it as essential for unity and love in Nigeria.
He added, “Abstention from eating and drinking should foster empathy from the rich towards the poor, making the well-to-do appreciate the conditions of millions who go hungry because of poverty.”

He encouraged the faithful to extend the lessons of fasting beyond Ramadan and Lent, and urged Nigerians to embody love, respect, and tolerance in addressing the nation’s challenges.
The Alaafin commended the Bola Tinubu administration for its focus on economic recovery, urging citizens to maintain hope and faith in God. He emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity should strengthen bonds of love, with religion serving as a vehicle for harmony among its people.
"The greatest tribute both Christians and Muslims can pay to Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad is to live by his example of a pacifist spirit and tolerance.
"These are the tools with which to strengthen the pillars of Nigeria's unity. There is no religion in the world that doesn't preach love, but practice has far greater impact on perception than precept."
