Heartland FC delivered a statement performance in front of their home fans in Owerri, brushing aside Gateway FC 3-0 in a commanding display that underlined their growing confidence and ambition.

But beyond the emphatic scoreline, it was the post-match reflections of Technical Manager Emmanuel Amuneke that truly captured the spirit of a team on the rise and one firmly focused on the bigger picture.

From the blast of the whistle, the Naze Millionaires showed intent. Emmanuel Charles set the tone early with a seventh -minute opener, before Udochukwu Anumudu doubled the lead in the 38th  minute. The icing on the cake came in the 71st  minute through Francis Erikan, sealing a dominant afternoon that keeps Heartland firmly in third place with 23 points from 13 matches.

Erikan who was a handful for Gateway FC throughout the game and adjudged the Man of the Match of the game also received his award as the Heartland FC/Imo SWAN Player of the Month for February 2026.

For Amuneke, however, the victory was more than just three points, it was a reflection of growth, resilience, and learning from past shortcomings.

“It is a very different scenario,” he noted, referencing their earlier away clash in Abeokuta which ended in a goalless draw. “We had our moments but failed to convert them then. Today, we took our chances.”

That clinical edge made all the difference. Against a Gateway FC side that had also strengthened its ranks, Heartland showed maturity and composure, punishing opportunities when they came. Amuneke was quick to acknowledge the quality of the opposition, but emphasized his side’s improved efficiency in front of goal.

“We played against a good side, but we took our chances better today,” he said, congratulating his players for their discipline and execution.

Yet, beyond results, Amuneke’s philosophy is steadily taking root. The former African Player of the Year is building a team not just on talent, but on intelligence, expression, and understanding of the game.

“We are trying to build a playing philosophy where players can express themselves and understand the game more intelligently. Football is not about talent alone,” he explained.

This ideology is beginning to translate onto the pitch, with Heartland evolving into a cohesive unit that continues to improve with each outing. Amuneke highlighted this steady progression, noting that every game contributes to the team’s development.

“Every game we are playing, we are growing as a team,” he added, with visible satisfaction.

Despite the resounding win, there is no room for complacency. The focus quickly shifts to the next challenge a crucial away trip to Awka, where Heartland will face Edel FC on Sunday, April 5.

Amuneke remains grounded, stressing the importance of preparation and adaptability as the season enters a crucial phase.

“We are not here to make noise. We just want to play our games and approach each one as it comes. Every game has its own challenges and stress. It is for us to adapt.”

With three games left, the stakes could not be higher. Heartland’s push for a Nigeria Premier Football League slot intensifies, with strong competition from Inter Lagos and Beyond Limits. Amuneke is under no illusions about the difficulty of the task ahead.

“We know the remaining games will be difficult, but what matters is our readiness to achieve our objectives,” he affirmed.
