Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Yekini Nabena, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to quickly intervene and save the party structures from being hijacked by state governors.
He made the appeal against an allegation that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) is working surreptitiously towards handing over the party structures to the governors, expressing fears that the development may be counterproductive ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Expressing concern in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, the former party spokesman said that information at his disposal from the national secretariat of the party showed that the NWC was about to handover the structures of the party to state governors at the detriment of committed party members.
The Bayelsa state-born politician cautioned the party's highest administrative organ from making the mistake of handing over the party structures to governors as the party gears up for its nationwide congresses to elect new leaders.
He warned that the move would not only be counterproductive, but also breed resentment, deprive real party men and women, and eventually chase away faithful members from the party.
Nabena urged the NWC to do the right thing at all levels by selling nomination forms to all those who want to contest to avoid litigation and friction from all the states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Demanding quick intervention of leaders of the party, Nabena said, "As the party prepares for congresses, the report we are getting is that all the nomination forms are being delivered to the Governors, who will eventually determine who becomes what by selection.
"This will not end well. In fact, it will be the beginning of an internal crisis, which may lead to implosion.
"I think this move should be avoided now before it is too late. So, I appeal to our National Working Committee led by Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda to do the right thing now before it is too late.
"It is also important that the elders and leaders of our party speak up now by calling the NWC members to order so that they won't proceed in error."
While cautioning against internal implosion, Nabena particularly said, "President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should intervene now before the commencement of the exercise nationwide.
"So, my appeal to the NWC is that they should not chase away the remaining masses we have in the party. APC used to have about 40 million registered members, but now we are struggling to get 10 million registered members in the ongoing electronic registration. This calls for caution, and we must be wise to do the right thing now."
