- Consensus all the way, parallel congress in Benue
The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday moved a step forward in its preparations for next year’s general election.
State officers were elected by the chapters during the congresses held across the federation through consensus and affirmation in accordance with the party’s constitution.
But the congresses were not held in Ekiti and Osun states, where the parties are preparing for the June and August governorship polls.
The exercise was largely peaceful and orderly in many ststes, where party leaders had reached an accord on the modalities for the compositión of the state executives in manners that reflected the party’s core values of equity, compromise and inclusivity.
However, there was tension in the Benue chapter where parallel congresses were held by party chieftains loyal to Governor Hyacinth Alia and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
Ahead of the congress, Vice President Kashim Shettima had convened to the two leaders President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s peace message to the polarised chapter, urging the chieftains to sheathe their swords and close ranks.
The implication of the paralled congresses is that National Chairman Prof. Netanwe Yilwatda-led National Working Committee (NWC), has to set up a reconciliation committee to resolve the Alia/Akume feud.
Also, there were drama in Bayelsa and Taraba states, where defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who recently moved to the APC along with Governors Douye Dirí and Agbo Kefas were elected party chairmen.
There was a high turnout in states such as Lagos, Kogi, and KaKatsina although the exercise was overshadowed in Ondo State by a subsisting court order that the party chose to ignore.

IInLagos, Niger, Jigawa, and Borno, the party adopted a consensus model to return incumbent executives or elect new ones, a method widely praised by governors and stakeholders as a tool for fostering unity.
APC governors used the platform to pledge loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and signalled their intent to deliver their states for his re-election.
In Kwara, Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq declared that the “opposition has collapsed” nationally, while in Enugu, Governor Peter Mbah linked the state’s political alignment with the centre to tangible developmental gains.
