In a bid to strengthen local healthcare access and promote healthy living, the Northern Progressive Group (NPG), Southwest Zone, last Saturday launched a state-wide free medical check-up and awareness initiative. The exercise, which took place at Aguda, Surulere, Lagos, drew residents from across the local community, offering vital health screenings and educational guidance.

The initiative, spearheaded by national APC Women Leader, Hajiya Ramatu Lawal, attracted more than 200 market women, traders, youths, landlords, and community residents who arrived early to benefit from the on-the-spot medical services. The programme, designed to raise awareness of common health risks, focused on screening for high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar levels—conditions that, if left unchecked, can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes-related illnesses.

The medical team, led by Matron Ibilola Dosunmu, set up the screening stations promptly at 11 a.m., ensuring that participants were attended to efficiently.

Alhaji Dahiru Musa, the event chairman, translated key health messages into Hausa to ensure that everyone understood the importance of the exercise. Addressing participants, Alhaji Musa emphasized that routine health screenings were critical in detecting potential risks early and reducing the likelihood of serious health complications.

Matron Dosunmu explained the significance of the tests, saying, “Blood pressure measures the force that blood exerts on the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps, while blood sugar—or glucose—is the main energy source derived from the food we consume. Regular monitoring of these parameters is essential to maintaining good health and preventing long-term complications.” She added that the NPG initiative aimed to increase life expectancy and promote wellness in Lagos communities through awareness and early detection.

Hajiya Ramatu Lawal’s commitment to public health and humanitarian service was praised by community leaders in attendance. Alhaji Musa lauded her selflessness and dedication, noting that her philanthropic efforts have consistently focused on improving the lives of residents across Lagos.

Other notable attendees, including Hajiya Maryam Adamu, Hajiya Maryam Abubakar, Ahmed Tijani Sulaiman, and Alhaji Waziri Usman, described her as a bridge builder whose compassion and purposeful initiatives continue to benefit communities.

Health experts highlighted the importance of routine blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring, stressing that these simple screenings can prevent severe health outcomes. Adults and children alike were advised to maintain optimal levels through regular diagnostic checks. Detecting abnormalities early allows for timely interventions, potentially preventing heart attacks, kidney failure, stroke, and other life-threatening conditions. The NPG Southwest Zone’s community health check-up demonstrates the impact of proactive health initiatives, combining medical services with education to empower residents to take charge of their health. By bringing healthcare closer to the people, the programme not only improves immediate well-being but also fosters a culture of preventive healthcare that can save lives over time.

For Lagos communities, the message is clear: awareness, early detection, and accessible healthcare are essential tools in building healthier, longer lives. With continued support from leaders like Hajiya Ramatu Lawal and organisations like NPG, more residents are likely to benefit from initiatives that put health and wellness at the forefront.
