It was jubilation galore at Lilu in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, as Nigerian Army distributed educational materials to the management, teachers and pupils of Ogwumabiri Primary School.

The items distributed were school bags and exercise books.

Presenting the gifts on behalf of Maj.-Gen. Oluremi Fadairo, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu, Brig.-Gen. S. A. Jimoh said the gesture was aimed at giving beneficiaries sense of belonging as well as inspiring them to pursue academic excellence, while creating atmosphere of comradeship with the community.

According to him, the Army as is their tradition to enhance academic excellence and civil/military relationship decided to put smiles on the faces of the pupils of the school by sharing out quality school bags and exercise books to them.

“This is an act motivated by the Army’s belief that education is a legacy and a strong tool for social engineering, economic well-being and positive all round development,” he added.

Jimoh encouraged the workers and pupils to use the gifts to improve their academic qualities, saying the Army would provide maximum security not just for the pupils, but also the entire community and indeed the state.

Addressing reporters, Deputy Director Army Public Relations 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, described the children as the future of any community.

He underscored the importance of peace to development, which he said motivated the Army to develop the children as leaders of tomorrow.

“Those who are afraid of coming back should return to their home, as peace is gradually returning to the community,” he stressed.

Receiving the gifts on behalf of the school, the Head Teacher, Mrs Grace Nnubia, thanked the Army for the gesture and promised to uphold the standard of the school to meet the excellence for which the Army is known.

The visibly excited benefiting pupils could not hold their joy. The indigenes expressed gratitude to the Army for bringing back life and social activities into their hitherto deserted community.

Some of the officers who were part of the presentation team were Colonel Madaki Yakubu, Commander 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support) Onitsha and other senior officers from 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu.
