The African Union (AU), through its long-term development blueprint, Agenda 2063, has nominated Daniel Koussou as African Union Special Envoy on Oil and Gas (Continental), reinforcing the continent’s push to harness its energy resources for sustainable development and economic transformation.

Agenda 2063, AU’s 50-year framework for structural transformation, sustainable development and economic integration, places energy at the centre of Africa’s industrialisation drive. Koussou will lead advocacy to ensure that Africa’s hydrocarbon resources are strategically deployed to support continental prosperity, boost industrial growth and strengthen energy security.

AU said Koussou’s mandate also extend to global engagement, with the envoy expected to represent Africa’s interests in forums. As chief executive officer and founder of Dau-O-Gik Oil and Gas, he will advocate policies that ensure Africa’s developmental priorities are not sidelined amid global decarbonisation debates.

AU noted that Koussou’s track record and credentials align with these aspirations, saying his nomination is timely and critical to translating its vision into tangible outcomes.

A seasoned diplomat and global leader, Koussou was  appointed by BIGWIL International Community of CEOs and Diplomatic Forum, under International Human Rights Observatory–Africa as one of the experts shaping discussions on economic diplomacy.

He currently chairs the Committee on Economic Diplomacy, Trade and Investment for the forum’s Nigeria chapter.

Observers say his leadership is expected to stimulate informed dialogue on Nigeria’s economic potential and its strategic importance in international relations, while strengthening Africa’s collective voice on energy, trade and investment.

The AU expressed confidence that Koussou’s appointment will contribute to advancing sustainable growth, shared prosperity and lasting peace across the continent, in line with the long-term goals of Agenda 2063.
