The Niger State Government has confirmed the death of 16 persons, including the commander of a local vigilante group in Bagna, 13 other vigilante members, and two civilians, following recent attacks by bandits in communities within Shiroro Local Government Area.

The Commissioner for Information, Obed Nuhu Nana, disclosed this in a statement, noting that security forces recorded significant gains during the operations, with 110 bandits neutralised across multiple locations as they attempted to flee under sustained pressure.

According to the government, 47 of the attackers were neutralised in Lantan Village in Erena Ward, 21 in Lakupe in Kwaki Ward, 16 in Luwidna, also in Kwaki Ward, 20 in Farin Kasa in Allawa Ward, and six in Rafin Barden Dawaki in Kurebe Ward.

The statement highlighted that the ongoing operations are being carried out by a joint security team comprising the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilante volunteers, describing the outcome as a reflection of intensified and coordinated efforts to restore stability in the area.

The government expressed regret over the loss of lives, particularly those of security personnel and civilians, and extended condolences to affected families and communities, acknowledging their sacrifice.

It added that security operations in the area have been intensified, with additional reinforcements and strategic measures deployed to sustain the momentum and prevent further attacks.

Residents were advised to remain vigilant, limit movement in vulnerable areas, and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.

The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring the public that the situation is being closely monitored as efforts continue to restore lasting peace across Shiroro Local Government Area and adjoining communities.
