At least three persons were killed, unspecified number of residents and travellers abducted and a passenger bus set ablaze by bandits in the last five days in Yagba West Local Government Area, Kogi State

On Tuesday evening, for example, one person was killed, and three others abducted at Idi Ogun, Bareke, Egbe, the commercial centre of Yagba West Council.

Soldiers at the military Forward Operating Base (FOB), Egbe and local vigilantes had the herculean task of containing the criminals in a gun duel around Idi-Ogun, Bareke. During the raid, Juwon Ajisafe, a commercial motorcyclist, was shot dead, while the female occupant on the bike was abducted alongside two other males.

Same Tuesday evening, the armed gang also attacked the home of Francis Ogungbemi, the personal assistant to Senator Sunday Karimi at Idi-Ogun, Bareke, Egbe. The senator’s aide escaped assassination or being kidnapped. The entrance door and properties in the building riddled with bullets in an attempt to kidnap him and his wife. The criminals, however, did not succeed. After futile attempts to force their way into the apartment, the bandits fled upon noticing the advance of soldiers to the scene.

The incident was preceded by the abduction, a day earlier, of two persons, while one other sustained wounds from gunshots in Odo-Ere, the council headquarters.

The surge in the violent attacks by suspected bandits forced the local government authorities to announce the closure of schools at midday on Wednesday and imposed a curfew from 7:p.m to 6:a.m.
