The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has called on Nigerian students to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing the administration’s ongoing reforms in the education sector.

Barau made the call on Friday in Abuja while chairing activities marking the 45th anniversary of the National Association of Nigerian Students.

He said continuity in leadership would sustain key initiatives such as student loans and other interventions aimed at expanding access to higher education and improving learning conditions across the country.

According to him, the Tinubu administration has demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing national challenges through bold reforms, particularly in the education sector.

"The time is here for the Nigerian students to show their appreciation by supporting the second term bid of Mr President so that this trajectory of helping students, the trajectory of bringing reforms and innovations to transform our education sector, to help the youth, will continue.

"Let them continue to cooperate with the government, to work with the government, and work for His Excellency's re-election. Now, we have a government that is friendly to youth, that is helping the youth, that is transforming their lives, and that is making it possible for the children of the poor to pursue their educational pursuits. So they should now reciprocate by coming together to work with Mr President so that all the goodies that Mr President is providing will continue and their lives will be fully transformed," he said.

Barau urged students to cooperate with the government, describing the current administration as youth-friendly and focused on transforming lives by creating opportunities for young Nigerians, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, the Deputy Senate President commended the President’s interventions, noting that they are laying a solid foundation for long-term national development.

He identified key initiatives to include the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the establishment of new tertiary institutions, improved engagement with academic unions, and policies aimed at stabilising the academic calendar.

“These are critical foundations for a stronger future. Education remains the most powerful tool for national transformation, and we must continue to expand access, improve quality, and align it with the realities of a modern world,” Barau said.

He stressed the need to equip young people not only with certificates but also with practical skills, innovation, and entrepreneurial capacity to thrive in a dynamic economy.

While acknowledging the historic role of students in national development, Barau described NANS as a vital partner in promoting youth development and inclusive growth.

He, therefore, urged the association’s leadership to sustain responsible engagement and constructive activism.

“Let your activism be guided by patriotism, integrity, and a genuine desire to build a strong nation. Let this anniversary mark a renewed commitment to a future anchored on unity, opportunity, justice, and shared prosperity,” he added.
