Battle royale for senatorial seat in Imo
Tension is rapidly escalating across Imo State as a high-stakes political battle brews over the Imo West (Orlu Zone) senatorial seat, with heavyweights from both the ruling All Progressives Congress

Tension is rapidly escalating across Imo State as a high-stakes political battle brews over the Imo West (Orlu Zone) senatorial seat, with heavyweights from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties converging for what is shaping up to be one of the fiercest contests ahead of the 2027 general election.
At the centre of the storm is an attempt by influential APC stakeholders to project Governor Hope Uzodimma as a consensus candidate for the seat—a move that has triggered resistance and drawn multiple power brokers into the race in open defiance.
Far from settling the field, the push for consensus appears to have ignited a full-blown intra-party showdown.
Former governor and two-term senator Rochas Okorocha has reportedly thrown his hat into the ring, a development widely viewed as a strategic effort to reassert his influence and directly challenge Uzodimma’s dominance in the zone. Sources indicate that, beyond electoral ambition, lingering political rivalries are also fueling the contest.
“This is more than just about the Senate seat. There are longstanding grievances, and many stakeholders feel excluded from the party’s decision-making process,” a source familiar with the situation revealed.
Discontent within the APC has deepened, with concerns about leadership style and internal consultation. Several party insiders argue that key decisions have been taken without broad engagement, prompting influential figures to test their political strength at the polls rather than align with a predetermined outcome.
The incumbent senator, Osita Izunaso, has also added a layer of intrigue. Though he had earlier signalled interest in seeking re-election, indications now suggest he may step aside if the governor formally enters the race.

“As a ranking senator, he was preparing for another term, but the dynamics have clearly shifted. It’s unlikely he will directly confront the governor,” a close associate disclosed.
Meanwhile, reports that Senator Ifeanyi Ararume has obtained nomination forms have further intensified the looming clash within the APC, raising the prospect of a bruising primary contest among some of the party’s most prominent figures.
The unfolding drama is not confined to the ruling party. The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is also witnessing a surge in interest, with several aspirants stepping forward across the state’s three geopolitical zones.
Among those linked to the PDP senatorial race are Chief Jones Onyeariri (Orlu Zone), Chief Mike Ejiogu (Okigwe Zone), former deputy governor Prince Eze Madumere (Owerri Zone), and Mr Dammes Nwokie (Owerri Zone), underscoring the breadth of ambition across party lines.
Across Imo State, political activity has intensified as aspirants scramble for tickets not only for the Senate but also for the House of Representatives and State House of Assembly seats, indicating a broader atmosphere of heightened electoral competition.
Confirming the surge, APC Publicity Secretary, FCC Jones, said the number of aspirants remains fluid as more contenders continue to purchase nomination forms.
“It is not possible to give the exact number at this time because the process is still ongoing. We expect to have clearer figures by the close of sales,” he noted.
On the PDP side, Publicity Secretary Lancelot Obiaku echoed similar sentiments, adding that the party had extended its deadline to accommodate more aspirants.
“Our aspirants are still obtaining forms, and the process remains open until next week,” he said, reaffirming the interest of key contenders across zones.
Political analysts say the convergence of influential aspirants—combined with internal disagreements over consensus arrangements—has set the stage for a fiercely contested race that could redefine political alignments in Imo State.
With rivalries hardening and ambitions colliding, the battle for the Imo West senatorial seat is fast evolving into a political showdown with far-reaching implications, particularly for the APC, where unresolved tensions risk deepening internal fractures if not carefully managed.
