Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has indicated he may leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing deepening internal crises and describing the party as “headless.”

The development followed an ongoing crisis within the PDP, marked by factional disputes and defections to rival parties.

Mohammed spoke on Wednesday after a closed-door meeting with an African Democratic Congress (ADC) delegation, led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, at the Government House in Bauchi.

He described the ADC as a “more enduring and acceptable platform,” confirming that discussions are underway regarding a possible defection.

“I have pursued all avenues for reconciliation within PDP, but it has not worked,” the governor said. “We cannot remain where we are not wanted. ADC appears to be where our political destiny is taking us.”

He disclosed that committees have been constituted at both national and state levels to evaluate options, including engagement with the All Progressives Congress (APC), but stressed that his priority is a platform capable of uniting the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mohammed also criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, alleging that he has taken control of the PDP structure.

“We have somebody called Wike who is being used to destroy us… he has already taken over the party, holding all the positions of PDP,” he said.

The governor said a formal decision would be announced by Thursday, adding that consultations with key stakeholders are ongoing.

Speaking for the ADC delegation, Babachir Lawal said the party is actively courting Mohammed as part of efforts to strengthen the opposition ahead of 2027.

“Senator David Mark sent us because he understands that the 2027 contest requires unity among well-meaning Nigerians,” Lawal said.

He described Mohammed as “a dogged, fearless leader” whose involvement would be critical to the party’s strategy, adding that discussions were “fruitful, friendly and constructive.”

Lawal further warned of the stakes involved in the next election cycle, arguing that a united opposition is essential to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
