A Bauchi-based group, Ikra Foundation for Women and Youths Development (IFWYD), has trained 50 out-of-school girls in reproductive health and right protection skills.

The girls were trained under the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) project supported by IPAS- Nigeria.

The Project Coordinator, Huzaifa Abubakar, said  yesterday in Bauchi that girls aged between 15 and 18 were drawn from various communities in the state.

Abubakar said the programme focussed at exposing adolescent girls, who lack access to vital information to essential SRHR knowledge.

He said the organisation had earlier trained caregivers of the participants to provide them with basic understanding of SRHR.

The coordinator said the project approach aims to encourage open communication between the girls and their caregivers on sensitive reproductive health issues, to enable them to make informed decisions.

Abubakar said the girls were also sensitised to menstrual hygiene and management, and how to access youth friendly services at primary healthcare centres.

“The organisation also conducted a youth forum session for remedial and 100-level students at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), to create awareness on SRHR,” he said.
