Africa Leadership Initiative West Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to building ethical, value-driven leaders to strengthen institutions and driving societal transformation.

As part of this effort, the organisation launched its National Leadership Dialogue in Lagos, a platform to bring leaders together to address institutional and social challenges through engagement and shared learning.

Founded over two decades ago, the body is a regional leadership organisation affiliated with Aspen Institute, United States. It was established through a partnership between Databank Foundation in Ghana and LEAP Africa in Nigeria, with a vision of building a “Good Society” that is just, equitable, and sustainable.

The organisation draws together senior leaders from business and finance, public service and policy, technology and entrepreneurship, as well as civil society and the media from Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. As a member of Aspen Global Leadership Network, it connects its Fellows to a global community of over 4,000 leaders in over 60 countries.

The President of the Nigerian chapter, Mr. Soji Apampa, said dialogue and value-based leadership is critical to addressing Africa’s challenges. According to him, societies advance when leaders prioritise dialogue over conflict, values over power, and service over self-interest, adding leadership is defined by commitment to the public good rather than titles or positions.

ALIWA’s Fellowship Programme focuses on ethical reflection, peer learning, and decision-making under pressure, challenging participants to examine values, power, and responsibility. The organisation also runs a Youth Leadership Programme designed to equip emerging leaders with principles of value-based leadership to drive positive change in their communities.

The Executive Director of ALIWA, Mrs. Ayo Maji, noted that the organisation is focused on moving leaders “from success to significance.” She explained that the Fellowship challenges leaders to look beyond personal achievements and consider their broader responsibility to society, while preparing them to use their influence to strengthen institutions and improve lives.

A core component of ALIWA’s work is the emphasis on ventures and initiatives led by its Fellows. These include social enterprises, policy interventions, and civic initiatives aimed at translating leadership learning into measurable social impact and sustainable solutions across West Africa.

Through its Fellowship, Youth Leadership Programme, and growing network of leaders, ALIWA says it remains committed to fostering ethical leadership, collaboration, and long-term institutional development in the region.
