The former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Shekarau announced his resignation from the PDP on Sunday at his Mundubawa Avenue Residence in Kano following days of consultations, including with his Shura committee (supporters).

In a resignation letter dated April 19, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Shekarau said his exit takes immediate effect.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.

The letter was also copied to the Kano State PDP Chairman and the PDP Chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area, indicating formal notification across party structures.

“This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group to pursue our political career in a different political party,” Shekarau stated.

He expressed appreciation to the party leadership at the ward level.

“I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship,” he added.

The Nation learnt Shekarau's house has been decorated with APC posters, which also signals his defection to the APC.

Shekarau, who served two consecutive terms as Kano governor between 2003 and 2011, rejoined the APC days after the APC national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, invited him to the ruling party alongside another PDP chieftain, Bello Hayatu.

Shekarau was a founding member of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), under which he served as governor.

In 2014, Shekarau defected to the PDP after his former party, the ANPP, merged with others to form the APC.

Observers believe he is expected to formally rejoin the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming days.
