The African Volleyball Confederation has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigerian international beach volleyball referee, Timothy Samuel, describing his death as a huge loss to the sport across the continent.
In an official condolence message dated April 26, 2026, and signed by CAVB President Bouchra Haji, the continental body announced the tragic demise of Samuel, who also served as Technical Representative on the board of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation.

The statement noted that his sudden death has thrown the African volleyball community into mourning, highlighting his role as one of the pioneering African beach volleyball referees. Samuel was widely respected for his unwavering dedication to the growth and promotion of the sport, not just in Nigeria but across Africa.
CAVB praised his professionalism, passion, and immense contributions, describing him as a “true team player and a gentle giant” who inspired countless referees, players, and administrators. His impact, the body emphasized, extended beyond national borders, leaving a lasting legacy on the African volleyball landscape.
The federation extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, and all who had the privilege of working with him, while calling for unity in grief and remembrance of a man who devoted his life to the sport.
Samuel’s passing marks the end of an era for African beach volleyball officiating, with tributes continuing to pour in from across the continent in honour of his service and commitment.
