Unbeaten Agunbiade storms into Boys 16s semi-finals

By David Bolarinwa

Cross River State's Damilola Agunbiade has advanced to the semi-finals of the Boys 16s category at the 2026 Central Bank of Nigeria Junior Tennis Championship, completing the preliminary round unbeaten at the National Stadium Tennis Courts in Surulere, Lagos.

The 16s contender posted four consecutive wins — defeating John Israel 9-2, Joseph Austin 9-4, Peter Festus 9-1, and top seed Isa Yahaya 9-7 — to finish the round-robin phase with a flawless record.

Speaking after his final group-stage match, Agunbiade said he had entered it without pressure, having already secured his semi-final berth. He declared his sights set firmly on Saturday's final, hinting at unfinished business from a previous tournament.

His father and chaperone, Tunde Agunbiade, swiftly intervened, urging the youngster to focus on the semi-final before looking further ahead.
