Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Lateef Ashimi, has joined the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, to inaugurate operational headquarters of EKO Strike Force in Somolu.

The inauguration, which had in attendance the Executive and Legislature, marked the transformation of the former Bashua Police Post—originally built during the administration of Abdul Hamed Salawu (Dullar)—into a fully equipped tactical security hub.

Ashimi noted that security remains a top priority of his administration, saying the presence of the tactical squad would strengthen safety and public order in the local government. He urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies while warning criminals that unlawful activities would not be tolerated.

Olohundare lauded the council for providing the facility, describing EKO Strike Force as an effective intervention unit. According to him, the squad has made progress in tackling crime, with recovery of 111 illegal firearms in the past year, a development he described as significant in the fight against violent crime.

The commissioner further explained that the operational headquarters, previously in Surulere, was relocated to Somolu to ensure quicker response to security challenges in Mainland and Island. He added that the team was established to complement activities of the Rapid Response Squad rather than compete with it.

He added that the unit has expanded significantly, growing from an initial fleet of five patrol vehicles to 17, and was recently strengthened with three Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) approved by the Inspector-General of Police to support high-risk operations.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Ayo Coker, appreciated the strong collaboration between the council and the police command. The unveiling ceremony was concluded with prayers offered by the Leader of the Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. James Oyeyiola.

Following the inauguration, traditional rulers, market leaders, representatives of Community Development Committees/Associations (CDC/CDA), youth leaders, and security agencies—including the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps—participated in a confidence-building patrol.
