An Islamic scholar, Sheikh Mudathir Ajileye, has urged Muslims to see fasting in the month of Ramadan beyond mere abstinence from food and drinks.

Ajileye, in his address at a programme organised to sensitise Muslim youths on the spiritual essence of the month of Ramadan, held at the Ansarudeen Mosque, Ikirun, Osun state.

He reiterated the importance of Muslims paying serious attention to the condition of their hearts during the 30-day fasting period.

"To fast effectively and receive positive results, we must rid our hearts of malice, bitterness and unforgiving spirit, as these can hinder the true spirit of fasting," he noted.

He observed that fasting in the month of Ramadan has serious spiritual significance and should not be treated with levity or reduced to a mere ritual of avoidance of eating and drinking alone.
