A fertility specialist has raised concerns about increasing infertility among Nigerian women, urging early diagnosis and improved access to reproductive health services.

Chief Medical Director of FertProMax Fertility Clinic, Dr Olajide Wilson, said this during a media tour of the facility in Lagos.

Wilson said the clinic has recorded a steady rise in women and couples seeking care, attributing the trend to delayed childbearing, increased awareness, and underlying health conditions.

“Infertility is no longer something people can ignore or hide. We are seeing more women come forward, asking questions, and seeking solutions,” he said.

According to him, many patients present late after years of unsuccessful attempts to conceive, often due to stigma and limited access to specialised care.

He noted the facility offers services including in vitro fertilisation, egg and sperm preservation, fertility screening, and prenatal diagnostics to address growing reproductive health needs.

Wilson added that the clinic also operates donor programmes and structured surrogacy services, in line with ethical and medical guidelines, to support individuals and couples exploring alternative options to parenthood.

On performance, he said the centre has recorded over 70 per cent pregnancy and live birth rates through surrogacy, over 60 per cent success with donor eggs, and more than 55 per cent live birth rates using patients’ own eggs.

Dr Wilson, however, identified cost as a major barrier to accessing fertility care in Nigeria, noting that most treatments are not covered by health insurance schemes.

He called for increased awareness, early testing, especially among intending couples, and policy support to improve access to fertility services.

Wilson further said the clinic provides advanced laboratory support to other fertility providers, a model he described as a step towards expanding access to specialised reproductive technologies.

He stressed the need to address stigma associated with infertility, particularly against women, adding that timely medical intervention could improve outcomes.
