The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has visited Liberia to attend the country’s 69th Armed Forces Day celebrations.

Spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Apollonia Anele, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

She said that Lt.-Gen. Shaibu, who at one time served as Military Assistant to a former Chief of Army Staff of Liberia, was in the country at the invitation of the Armed Forces of Liberia.

According to Anele, the visit underscores Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to defense diplomacy, the deepening of bilateral military cooperation, and the strengthening of regional security collaboration in the West African sub-region.

She said upon arrival, the Lt.-Gen Shaibu, who was at a time the Military Assistant to the former Chief of Army Staff Armed Forces of Liberia, was warmly received by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Major General Davidson Forley.

She said that, as a mark of honour and mutual military respect, the COAS subsequently inspected a Guard of Honour mounted by the Liberian military.

Anele noted that the ceremony “symbolizes the enduring professional ties and cooperation between the two sister armed forces, reflecting the high regard in which the Republic of Liberia holds the Nigerian Army.”

She said the COAS also visited the Nigeria Embassy in Liberia, where he was received by the Chargé d’Affaires, Ambassador Rahmat Muhammad. During the visit, she said the COAS interacted with embassy officials and commended their efforts in strengthening Nigeria–Liberia bilateral relations and safeguarding Nigerian interests in the host country.

“The COAS’s participation in Liberia’s Armed Forces Day Celebration further reflects Nigeria’s resolve to foster professional solidarity and strategic partnerships with sister African militaries in the fight against emerging security challenges,” Anele said.

Liberia celebrates Armed Forces Day annually on February 11 to honor the military’s role in national security and development, with the 69th edition highlighting efforts to strengthen regional cooperation.

The day features ceremonies at the Barclay Training Center in Monrovia, the country's capital, including parades and commemorations for veterans and active-duty personnel.
