Panic gripped the Bayelsa State Secretariat in the early hours of Wednesday following an explosion that led to the mass evacuation of civil servants.

It was gathered that an unidentified protester, who allegedly claimed to have planted explosives within the complex, was arrested at the scene and is currently undergoing interrogation.

Security operatives reportedly responded swiftly, ordering an immediate evacuation of the premises to protect lives and prevent possible casualties.

A source indicated that the suspected explosion may have been a false alarm, as devices recovered at the scene were described as low-capacity firecrackers, incapable of causing structural damage.

Although calm has since been restored, the Head of Civil Service directed workers to suspend operations for the day as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

However, the Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed the detonation of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Musa Mohammed, a 60-year-old suspect identified as Pentecost Elijah was arrested in connection with the incident.

The police assured that the situation is under control, noting that no lives were lost and no property was damaged, and urged members of the public to remain calm.

Part of the statement reads, "I wish to inform the general public of a suspected IED explosion which occurred today, 11th February 2026, at about 0600hrs within the State Secretariat Complex.

"The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor psc, IICFIP, foosi, immediately led the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit, and other Tactical Teams to the scene.

"On arrival at the scene, the operatives of the Explosive Ordinance Unit swiftly contained the explosion.

"The area was immediately cordoned off, and upon detailed search, one unexploded IED was identified by EOD operatives and was rendered safe. No lives lost, no property destroyed.

"One Pentecost Elijah, 'm' 60 year old from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw LGA, Bayelsa State, was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident. He is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, and upon conclusion, the suspect will be charged in court."
