Osun State Government has refuted claims that it has dethroned, Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, Oba Joseph Oloyede, convicted and jailed in the United States over $4.2 million COVID-19 relief fraud.

The Nation recalls that Oba Oloyede, who holds dual citizenship of Nigeria and the United States, was arrested in May 2024 during a visit to the US over a $4.2 million COVID-19 support fund fraud and later sentenced to 56 months in prison by US District Judge Christopher Boyko.

An unconfirmed statement peddled the dethronement of Oba Oloyede by Osun State Government.

The government through Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Osogbo, denied deposition of Apetumodu of Ipetumodu.

He said: “The attention of Osun State Government has been drawn to a fake statement. It did not emanate from the Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment or the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The public and particularly indigenes of Ipetumodu are advised to disregard the fake viral story.

“The state government has had useful and meaningful consultation and dialogue with stakeholders of Ipetumodu and steps are being taken in line with the rule of law, which is the cornerstone of the current administration in the state.

“At the appropriate time, the public and indigenes of Ipetumodu will be informed of the action of government on the issue through the appropriate channels of communication.”
