Court jails ex-convict two years for stealing N1.4m electrical wires in Ondo

The Akure Division of the Chief Magistrates’ Court has sentenced an ex-convict, Matthew Simon, to two years’ imprisonment for burglary and theft of electrical wires valued at over N1.4 million.

The Akure Division of the Chief Magistrates’ Court has sentenced an ex-convict, Matthew Simon, to two years’ imprisonment for burglary and theft of electrical wires valued at over N1.4 million.

Simon was convicted after pleading guilty to a one-count charge of burglary and theft.

Police prosecutor P.O. Nwafor told the court that the offence occurred around 6:20 a.m. on January 20, 2026, at the Atipere Oda community in Akure.

According to the prosecution, Simon unlawfully broke into a premises and carted away electrical wires worth N1,417,400 belonging to Abdullahi Jimoh.

Ms. Nwafor said the act violated Sections 383, 390(9), and 411(2) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006, and urged the court to impose a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to others.

In his ruling, Magistrate Damilola Sekoni described the offence as grave and sentenced the defendant to two years in prison without the option of a fine.
