The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred an officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary action over the alleged extra-judicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident, describing it as a clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force.

The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun reportedly acted on credible intelligence from members of the public that the deceased had been apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

Spokesman Bright Edafe said police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody.

He, however, said the officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm, resulting in the suspect's death.

Edafe said following the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the Area Commander, Effurun, to immediately arrest the officer and transfer him to the State Headquarters in Asaba for necessary disciplinary action.

The spokesman said the officer had since been queried and moved to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he would appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, which is currently in session, for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution.

Edafe said the command remained committed to the principles of the rule of law, human rights, professionalism, accountability, and public trust, stressing zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness, and extrajudicial actions. conduct.

He said the CP also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, and assured them that the command would ensure justice is served.

The CP appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that all necessary steps were being taken to bring the officer responsible to justice.
