Nigeria’s rising tennis star Michael Emmanuel has hailed teamwork, preparation, and passionate home support following the country’s qualification for the Davis Cup World Group II, after defeating Uzbekistan in Lagos.

Emmanuel partnered Canice Abua in the decisive doubles match at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, where the Nigerian duo edged their Uzbek opponents 7–6, 6–4, a victory that proved pivotal in Nigeria’s eventual 3–1 win.

Speaking after the match, Emmanuel described the experience of playing in front of home fans as unforgettable.

“I’m so excited playing in front of the home crowd. It really meant a lot to me. There was some pressure, but I was able to adapt to it,” he said.

The 2025 CBN Open men’s singles champion credited Nigeria’s recent improvement to better preparation and unity within the squad.

“We are taking Nigeria to the next level now. The effort we put into training and into the matches is really working, and we are beginning to see the results,” Emmanuel noted.

On his partnership with Abua, Emmanuel highlighted their long-standing chemistry.

“He has been my partner for a long time, so this is not the first time we are playing together. The chemistry is there, and it’s amazing to see us move forward like this.”

Looking ahead, Emmanuel expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to compete on bigger international stages, particularly in Europe.

“We are looking forward to going to the next level, especially in Europe, to show that Nigeria is a country that can compete and also win there.”

He also acknowledged ongoing challenges within Nigerian tennis, calling for improved welfare and crowd management, while noting progress from administrators.

“The support has improved compared to before, and we are happy because we are seeing changes and results.”
