His wife, Kimberly, shared the news, asking for peaceful privacy as the family grieves.

"Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend", she wrote.

Van Der Beek rose to fame with his portrayal of Dawson Leery in the 1998-2003 teen drama, which followed a group of friends living in a small Massachusetts town.

He also appeared in films such as "Varsity Blues" and "The Rules of Attraction", but struggled to shake off the legacy of his iconic TV role.

In 2011, Van Der Beek spoke about his career, saying he was proud of his past work and had no regrets.

His death has been met with an outpouring of tributes and condolences from fans and colleagues.
