The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Aina Adesola, has called for stronger collaboration between security agencies and traditional institutions to combat rising cases of drug abuse, cultism and kidnapping in the state.
Adesola made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the palace of the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, HRM Emmanuel Sideso Abe I, in Effurun as part of a familiarisation tour of the newly created Effurun Area Command.
The police commissioner commended the monarch for sustaining peace in Uvwie and particularly praised the kingdom’s palace security committee for its role in monitoring criminal activities and supporting law enforcement efforts.
He urged community leaders and political actors not to interfere in criminal investigations and prosecutions, warning that such actions embolden criminals.

“It is only in Nigeria that families of criminals, kidnappers and cultists move from one police station to another attempting to influence officers through blackmail on social media in order to bend the law,” he said.
Adesola noted that the absence of interference in police investigations in Uvwie had contributed to the decline in criminal activities in the area and advised residents to discreetly pass security information directly to Area Commanders or Divisional Police Officers.
He also stressed the importance of parental guidance, urging parents not to shield children involved in criminal activities, while advising community leaders to properly screen commercial motorcycle operators as some collaborate with criminal elements.
Responding, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom blamed the rising crime rate on the declining respect for traditional institutions, which he said had weakened their ability to discipline erring youths.
The monarch also lamented situations where arrested criminals were released and later threatened those who reported them, adding that closer cooperation between security agencies and traditional rulers would strengthen efforts to tackle crime.
Meanwhile, during a visit to the temporary office of the Effurun Area Command, the Area Commander, ACP Aliyu Shaba, described Effurun as a strategic commercial hub with complex security challenges requiring proactive policing.
Shaba commended the monarch for his continued support for security agencies and pledged the command’s commitment to maintaining peace in the area.
He, however, appealed for assistance to repair the command’s Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), which has been out of service for a long time, and requested the deployment of additional personnel to enhance operational capacity and communication across divisions within the command.
