...seek government's, stakeholders' urgent intervention to tackle menace

Elders in Delta State, under the auspices of the Aniocha–Oshimili Elders’ Association, also known as Izu Ikei Aniocha–Oshimili, have expressed concern over what they described as escalating abuse of drugs and narcotics among youths in the state.

In a statement signed by its President, Sir Clement Okonjo, and Secretary, Chief Chris Biose, and made available to journalists in Asaba on Saturday, the association urged government authorities and relevant stakeholders to take urgent steps to curb the growing problem.

The elders raised the concern during their 43rd general meeting held recently in Asaba, describing the development as a rapidly spreading drug culture that has permeated virtually every community within the Aniocha–Oshimili axis.

According to the statement, drug abuse is no longer limited to isolated neighbourhoods but has become a widespread social challenge affecting villages and towns across the constituency.

The association warned that the trend poses significant risks to public safety, family cohesion, and the emergence of responsible future leaders in the state and the country at large.

It further cautioned that as the 2027 general elections draw nearer, unemployed and drug-dependent youths could be manipulated by unscrupulous actors to foment violence and social unrest.

They therefore urged the government and relevant stakeholders to take proactive and preventive measures to curb the menace before it escalates further.

The association lauded the proactive efforts of the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, for his advocacy aimed at curbing social vices, adding that traditional institutions are critical stakeholders in promoting moral discipline and community vigilance.

The group also lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for taking steps to destroy unauthorised and illegally occupied makeshift settlements within the state capital territory, which were often linked to criminal activities.

The elders, however, urged for more comprehensive and sustained action to decisively nip the menace in the bud.

They called for a clearly articulated strategy to combat drug trafficking and abuse within the state and across the federal constituency.

They said, "Safeguarding the future of Aniocha and Oshimili communities requires a united front — parents, guardians, educators, and community heads must take proactive roles in guiding young people and reporting suspicious activities.

"It also requires the collaboration between government agencies, security services, community leaders, schools, faith-based organisations, and youth groups, as well as expanded public enlightenment campaigns on the dangers of drug and narcotics abuse."

The elders pledged their continued support to all lawful initiatives aimed at restoring discipline, security, and moral values within the constituency.

“The future of our communities depends on the choices we make today,” the elders asserted.
