The Delta State government has announced that it is taking steps to establish a dedicated ministry for marine and blue economy to harness its coastal resources and drive economic growth.

Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the Blue Economy Investment Summit 2026, where stakeholders gathered to explore strategies for advancing Nigeria’s maritime sector.

He explained that the planned ministry is part of the state’s broader effort to align with federal initiatives, particularly the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

According to the deputy governor, Delta State has already put in place key institutional frameworks to support its blue economy agenda, including the creation of a steering committee and a technical committee.

He noted that the steering committee is responsible for policy direction and fine-tuning strategies, while the technical committee is focused on implementation and identifying priority areas within the sector.

Onyeme said the committees are currently working to outline practical steps for developing the state’s marine and coastal resources in a structured and sustainable manner.

He emphasised that Delta State possesses one of the longest coastlines among Nigeria’s coastal states, positioning it as a strong contender in the country’s maritime economy.

The deputy governor stated that the government is carefully selecting priority areas of investment within the blue economy, given the wide scope of the sector and existing funding constraints.

He added that the state could not develop all segments of the blue economy simultaneously, making it necessary to focus on areas with the highest potential for immediate impact.

Onyeme expressed optimism that the summit would attract investors and partners willing to support the state’s efforts to develop its maritime sector.

He noted that increased investor interest could accelerate the pace of implementation and help deliver tangible outcomes within a shorter timeframe.

While he did not provide a specific timeline, Onyeme assured that the state government is working to ensure that some aspects of the blue economy become operational before the end of the current administration.
