The Delta State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video alleging that some police officers assaulted a woman and subjected her to more than 40 strokes of the cane.
The footage, which has been widely circulated on X and other social media platforms, shows the woman narrating how she was allegedly brutalised by the officers.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state ordered an immediate and comprehensive probe into the allegations.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said preliminary steps had begun to verify the circumstances of the incident and identify the officers involved.
He explained that the matter had been referred to the appropriate investigative unit for discreet handling, while efforts were ongoing to ensure all personnel implicated are identified and held accountable.
Edafe urged the victim and the activist involved to report to the command and provide relevant information that could assist in the investigation.
He stressed that the command condemns all forms of assault, brutality, and abuse of citizens, noting that such conduct is contrary to the ethics and core values of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police reaffirmed that the command would not tolerate any violation of human rights, adding that any officer found culpable would face disciplinary action in line with the Police Act and other regulations.
He also assured the victim of confidentiality, protection, and institutional support throughout the investigative process.
The command advised the victim to contact the Police Public Relations Office or the Complaint Response Unit via the provided phone lines to aid ongoing inquiries.
Members of the public with relevant information, eyewitness accounts, or video evidence were also encouraged to come forward to support the investigation.
