Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, was laid to rest in Abuja yesterday following her death in Cairo, Egypt.

The matriarch died on Friday after a brief illness while receiving medical treatment in the Egyptian capital.

Her remains were flown into Abuja ahead of burial rites conducted in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Funeral prayers (Janazah) were held at the National Mosque, Abuja, after which she was interred at the Gudu Cemetery.

The burial attracted a cross-section of political leaders, including serving and former public office holders, as well as opposition figures.

Among those present were Kaduna State governor Uba Sani, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Ali Pantami and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Other dignitaries, political associates and family members were also in attendance to pay their last respects.

Atiku prayed for comfort for the bereaved family and urged them to take solace in faith during the difficult period.

He prayed that Almighty Allah grant the deceased eternal rest and admit her into Aljannah Firdaus.

Pantami appeared to broker peace between Sani and El-Rufai at the event.
